History of Furuya Ryokan

The entrance gate that welcomes you to Furuya Ryokan was used in the film "Kagemusha" by the world-famous movie director Akira Kurosawa. After entering the gate, you would find an unusual shape of pine tree. It is not a huge tree but has been standing here for a long time to watch the history of the Ryokan. Also, it is a place where Atami Post Office was used to be located. It has now been re-built in the city, however, the monument is still standing here in order to commemorate the first post office in Atami. Inside the ryokan, you will find pictures drawn by Sharaku (an Edo-era (1603-1867) artist), as well as the oldest radio in Japan, which was imported in the year 13 of Taisho era (1924). At that time, 5 radios were imported to Japan. One was a tribute to the Emperor, and others are gibe out to Tsuyoshi Inukai (the former Prime Minister of Japan), Head Office of Mitsui Bussan, Mitsui Family and the owners of Furuya Ryokan. The only one of those that still exists is the one in Furuya Ryokan. It is said that a number of people from all over Japan came to Furuya Ryokan to listen to it.
